Social Media Scams

These scams come in many forms. You may see a notification in your feed that you’ve won a gift card or other reward. However, enter your personal and banking information (the link will ask you to send your money). Scammers will use this information to commit fraud or close your account.

Another scam used by many social media sites is the rumour mill. In this case, an ad will appear, hinting at a fascinating conversation – you can click on the link to read all the exciting stories. If you do this, you will be redirected to a page asking you to download the latest Adobe Flash Player to read this article… However, doing this can download malware to your device, and the crooks will use all your private information to raid your device. And access your credit card, bank and other accounts.

Also, pay attention to health services spread on Facebook and other social platforms. You may receive a message or see an ad in your feed from a legal services firm that offers services such as replacing a lost Social Security card. The ad may also include the Medicare logo and other details that make it look suspicious. However, these companies charge very high fees when using their services. The Social Security Administration will replace your lost card with a new one or issue you a new card bearing your new name, free of charge.

Charity Scams

These scams take advantage of people’s good nature and want to make a positive change. You may receive cold calls and unsolicited emails or see ads online that appear to represent charities or similar organisations.

Many people fall for these scams and donate money to a company that becomes a successful organisation. These scams are prevalent during the holiday season, so be extra careful.

Warning signs of a charity scam include being pressured into making an immediate donation and/or asking you to donate cash, gifts, or bank transfers; these are scammers aiming to get money. Also, watch out for messages thanking you for a donation you forgot to make earlier. This is a scam used to trick victims into donating more
